What can you do when your dog is scratching with fleas?
When it’s warm weather it’s generally flea season and these irritating, blood-thirsty critters become more annoying than ever. The greatest challenge is to break the breeding cycle of fleas. Cleaning the entire house, flea bombing or using essential oils only lead to limited results.
A non-toxic, natural solution can help
Diatomaceous Earth (DE) is a non-toxic, natural solution you might want to try to help deal with fleas. DE is a fine powder which contains the fossilised remains of tiny, aquatic organisms called diatoms. The powder can be purchased from your local health store and can be used against fleas, cockroaches, ticks, mites, spiders and many other irritating tiny pests.
How does it works?
When insect come in contact with DE the oils and fats of their exoskeleton cuticle are absorbed, causing the insect to dry out and die. Its sharp edges are abrasive to the tiny insects which helps speed up the dehydration process.
- DE is effective as long as it is remains undisturbed and kept dry.
How you use this miracle dust?
Firstly make sure that you and your dog or cat do not breath in the fine DE powder or dust too much and avoid prolonged contact with your skin because it can slightly irritate.
- Sprinkle DE under your pet’s bedding or underneath lounge cushions where fleas may be hiding
- Use in areas where your dog hangs out a lot
- Re apply after vacuuming during flea season (during the warmer season)
Fleas have a life cycle of 2 weeks to 8 months, depending on several factor such as temperature, humidity, food and the type of flea. Breaking their life cycle can help bring them under control and remove the nuisance.
